Photo Thesis

This series centres around memorable spots from Jing’s childhood, that hold sentimental meaning to her. Depicting youthfulness and nostalgia through colour and composition.

To her, the series is about how times were simpler as a child. She wants the viewer to connect to the feeling of nostalgia and the statement “Times were simpler”.

Final Narrative Piece - Jing Marchant

The Music in Me

Artist Statement

This piece explores my flourishing and personal relationship with music and songwriting. I have been musically involved since a very young age, and I intend for this piece to be a reflection of that. I explore the wonders of being a musician including the experience of seeing live music, concerts, live performance, myself and the wonderful yet frightening process of songwriting. An ode to music.

Excerpt from a Creative Writing piece by Jing Marchant - “Study of a Place’’

Fairylike. Ethereal. Mossy. A short trek down a steep, yet lush trail and you are there. Birds singing around you. A stream of water running down the creek. You would not believe the place I am talking about is located in Burlington, Ontario. I am describing a ravine area that I would go to as a teenager. It holds a special place in my heart because of the series of activities I would do here. I would write music, I would record covers, I did my first photoshoot on a DSLR in this exact location.

I would come here alone, I would come here with friends. It was close to my home at the time, so it was easily accessible. A ten minute walk maximum. So peaceful it was. I remember recording a Rex Orange County song cover here when I was in high school. I could not tell you which song specifically, but you get the point. The silence and calmness of nature relaxed me. The flowing of the ravine’s water made for a peaceful background sound effect in my voice recordings. After recording multiple takes on the voice memos app on my iPhone. Up the trail, through the fence hole, back to my childhood home. The sun would set as I walked back home.

Releasing music is both terrifying yet exciting at the same time.

Ah ah ah ah

Ah ah ah ah

I was alone but then you hit my phone

In awe, wowed crazed and shocked

Home can be a person

And that's you to me

It's not always a place but that's not a bad thing

When I'm alone then you hit my phone

Always in awe, shook me to the bone

You make me feel at home and that is the best thing

That you can do, of what you can bring

I wanna know what you're doing right now

You can come pick me up we can go fuck around

I wanna know what you're saying right now

Cuz I just can't think and I want you around

And baby it's just not the same when you're on the phone

Whatchya saying? Whatchya saying? Whatchya saying? Whatchya saying?

Whatchya saying?

Ah ah ah ah

When I see your brown, brown eyes

There's no lows only highs

Put my hands to the skies

All worries aside

Keeping my eye on the prize

I wanna know what you're doing right now

You can come pick me up we can go fuck around

I wanna know what you're saying right now

Cuz I just can't think and I want you around

And baby it's just not the same when you're on the phone

Whatchya saying? Whatchya saying? Whatchya saying? Whatchya saying?

Whatchya saying?
